Thanks to all who joined NCRAOA reacting quickly and voicing

Threats of Childhood Obesity Fall Flat

Threats of Childhood Obesity Fall Flat

Today's headlines are hard to miss: "Child obesity rate in U.S. hits a plateau," "Childhood obesity rates high, but leveling off," "Childhood obesity rates stabilize," and more of the same. This media buzz surrounds a newly released study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, published in JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association. The agency's latest research demonstrates that childhood obesity rates haven't increased since 1999.

These findings fly in the face of almost a decade of threats by obesity activists. U.S. Surgeon General Richard Carmona called childhood obesity "the terrorist threat from within." Obesity scaremongers David Ludwig and S. Jay Olshansky forecasted "a two- to five-year drop in life expectancy unless aggressive action manages to reverse obesity rates." Even former president Bill Clinton got in on the action, warning that supposedly escalating rates of childhood obesity would trigger "a calamitous crisis in health."

But apocalyptic (and bogus) statistics of "skyrocketing" rates of obesity among our kids have only served to justify increasingly intrusive government regulations sought by activist groups and overeager health officials. Today's JAMA study should quiet those shrill (and unfounded) claims.

These findings clearly demonstrate that it doesn't take obtrusive government policies to curb children's weight. Instead, parents, schools, business, and others in our communities have taken it upon themselves to make sure kids get enough physical activity and eat a balanced diet.

This is a big win for personal and parental responsibility. But that's not how the food cops are spinning it. Ludwig, who wrote an editorial accompanying the JAMA study, is arguing that these results prove the need for a national war on fat (aka more bureaucratic intervention). It seems that no matter the news -- good or bad -- activists will leverage it as an excuse to meddle in our lives.

ALF does it's dirty work

Apparently it doesn't have to be a lab or restaurant. Even office supply stores can be victims:

anonymous report:

"Wednesday night after business hours in Ventura County, California, 2 Staples office supply stores were told to 'drop HLS.' At least 10 windows were etched in the front of one of the stores, locks were glued up, 'Drop HLS' was spray painted on the front wall, and red paint was splashed all over the entrance and sidewalk of both of the stores. This was done to remind them of the blood of innocent animals on their hands from associating with Huntingdon Life Sciences. Until they cut their ties with HLS, they can expect to have many more of their stores redecorated. All we ask is that Staples cut their ties with HLS, and they will be able to continue business as usual.

Partly anyway---It seems that oil companies have been wanting to drill
in huge oil fields of Alaska for years but the animal people keep
filing lawsuits to protect the polar bears.  Well, animal extremists,
was it worth it?

Organic-Only Outlook Not So Green

Organic-Only Outlook Not So Green

Wired magazine is taking on the 10 Inconvenient Truths of the environmental movement this week, and Green Heresy number 3 is especially noteworthy: Surprise! Conventional Agriculture Can Be Easier On The Planet! Now that organic food marketers and their devotees are having a harder time using bogus health claims to make their case, the consensus seems to be that the green bandwagon is the path to acceptance. Only that doesnt seem to be working out either. Wireds Joanna Pearlstein is the latest bearer of bad news:

The path to virtue, we all know, begins with organics. Meat, milk, fruit, veggies organic products are good for our bodies and good for the planet. Except when they're not good for the planet

Take milk. Dairy cows raised on organic feed aren't pumped full of hormones. That means they produce less milk per Holstein about 8 percent less than conventionally raised cattle. So it takes 25 organic cows to make as much milk as 23 industrial ones. More cows, more cow emissions That double whammy more cows and more emissions per cow makes organic dairies a cog in the global warming machine.

Thats right, not only isnt the organic-only darling, rBST-free milk, better for your health, it isnt better for the environment either. As Pearlstein suggests, its probably worse. Moving on:

[E]ven organic fruits and veggies are a mixed bushel: Organic fertilizers deliver lower-than-average yields, so those crops require more land per unit of food.

Setting aside her misconception that organic foods are pesticide-free, Pearlstein does touch on something very interesting when she points out that Big Organic ships its food thousands of miles. Whole Foods shoppers in Washington, DC were shocked recently when they were approached by reporters from a local news station, who told them to take a closer look at the labels on some of their organic products:

"Product of China! Whoa, look at that!"

One woman interviewed asked the obvious question: "So you have to ask yourself the question, how would they ever know if the organic rules are being followed?" Whole Foods declined to be interviewed.

To recap, then: Organic foods arent necessarily healthier, greener, or locally produced -- and, apparently, some of them might not even be organic at all!

So why should we pay $7 for milk again?

PETA: Cage Children, Not Animals

PETA: Cage Children, Not Animals

Some North Carolina parents are upset after People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals found a new low yesterday in its disturbing use of children to score activist points. As the centerpiece of an anti-circus protest, PETA employees dressed a 12-year-old girl in prison stripes, placed her inside an animal cage, and put her on public display.

Weve told you many times before how PETA targets children with its often lewd and offensive campaigns. But this is the first time weve seen the group enlisting the direct participation of someone so young for a live protest (in a cage no less!). Lets hope its not a sign of things to come.

Veggie Pride! (Nothing To See Here ... Move Along ...)

Veggie Pride! (Nothing To See Here ... Move Along ...)

New York City's anti-meat crowd had a big day yesterday. The nation's first "Veggie Pride Parade," held in Manhattan on Sunday, was a much-anticipated event. They had a website! And a press release! The New York Sun reported

Marchers may pepper the parade route with chants such as "What do we want? Vegan options in our schools! When do we want it? Now!" and carry eye-catching placards such as "Eating Meat: So 20th Century."...

The parade will have 10 marshals in bright orange vests to keep the peace and 10 outreach volunteers in bright yellow vests.

Organizer Pamela Rice explained that the NYC event was modeled after the annual vegan festival in Paris. There would be contests and prizes--even a vegetable wedding! Explained Rice: "We are the Woodstock of the 21st century."

After a long week of build up, the big day finally arrived. Today's New York Times recounts the unmitigated chaos that ensued upon the parade's gigantic climax in Greenwich Village:

The festivities began at noon in the meatpacking district -- get it? -- and drew about 600 people and at least one vegan dog -- Simba, a tofu-fed black Labrador retriever.

Woodstock indeed: 600 people and a vegan dog. Unfortunately for Rice and friends, even PETA was too busy protesting a horse race to be bothered.

If this is the new dietary vanguard, it doesn't look like omnivores have much to worry about. Unless, apparently, you're trying to sell some hot dogs. Adds The Times:

Perhaps unsurprisingly, business was decidedly thin at Salem Atwah's hot-dog stand, on the southwest corner or Washington Square South and LaGuardia Place. Rarely, Mr. Atwah said, had he sold so few hot dogs.

"It's because of the vegetarians," he said. "It's one of my worst days in four years."
