Big Fat Lies July 24, 2008

Same Old, Same Old ...

Same Old, Same Old ...

We hear dire warnings daily. Health experts have cautioned against talking on cell phones, eating butter, drinking tap water, and even sitting too close to the office printer. From bad to good and then back again, there's almost no aspect of our lives that hasn't been dubbed "dangerous" (even though many are false alarms or negligible risks). The situation has become so excessive that a fable on the subject would have to be titled "The Boy Who Cried 'Wolf,' 'Bear,' and 'Tyrannosaurus Rex.'" Here are a few recent examples of outrageous cries for attention.

Obesity, Again: Yesterday, a small cabal of legislators announced the "Federal Obesity Prevention Act of 2008," calling for a taskforce to propose national interventions for our diets. Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA), one of the bill's authors, showed his flair for the dramatic when he justified government action due to the "increasing urgency of this dire situation." Perhaps the Senator missed the latest research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, showing that childhood obesity rates haven't increased since 1999. (Or perhaps "leveling off urgency" doesn't sound quite as impressive.)

Meat Attack: This week the woefully misnamed Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) issued agenda-heavy "nutrition report cards" for schools across the country through a front group called The Cancer Project. Many districts flunked. Cafeterias' failing grades were based not on a complex analysis of age-appropriate nutrients, but on the simple inclusion of meat. ("F" is for frankfurter, you know.) The Washington Post reminded readers that it's standard PCRM practice to narrowly assess nutrition on "the number of vegetarian and vegan (excluding all animal products) menu items offered." That's an interesting method (and by "interesting" we mean "bad") for evaluating kids' food, considering that a vegan diet can be downright dangerous for children unless it's undertaken with caution.

PETA Pockets (Cash): In today's Seattle Post-Intelligencer, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) wasted a lot of newsprint trying to convince the public that it deserves a piece of the $8,000,000,000 bequest  "for the care and welfare of dogs" in the will of late hotel magnate Leona Helmsley. Luckily, we warned Post-Intelligencer readers last week that PETA doesn't deserve a dime due to its poor track record in caring for Man's Best Friend. The activist group raised $30 million last year, but found adoptive homes for less than one percent of the pets it took in for adoption. On the other hand, more than 90 percent of those dogs and cats were put to death by PETA employees, according to public records.

Bad Facebook Group, Good Facebook Group.

Bad Facebook group:

The evil correlation between OTAKU, Metal and meat consumption

Description:

People are social creatures, they crave acceptance and meaning. To be ignored is to not exist at all, that is why many of the social dregs will willingly associate. As was demonstrated in Fritz Lang's 'M' such voyaging for acceptance can lead to formation of evil social grouping, dedicated to immoral acts. Back then criminals, pedophiles and corrupt social guardians roamed the streets, reigning havoc amongst the righteous, the innocent the pure.

While we are still plagued by such social cretins our society has devolved to include greater deviants, those who indulge in Neanderthal-ic noises they label 'Metal', the pathetic who label themselves 'OTAKU', and the majority of morons who consume meat.

The devastation of any of these on a separate basis is cause for alarm itself, but we can see these dregs nowadays collecting together.
My dear... the humanity! The utter utter horror...

Animal Rights July 21, 2008

PCRM Hits Rock Bottom. Again.

PCRM Hits Rock Bottom. Again.

Things must be getting pretty desperate over at the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM). The fringe animal rights group has made quite a name for itself by playing doctor, giving out bum nutrition advice, and discouraging Americans from donating to their favorite cancer charities. And just when we thought the faux medical charity couldn't stoop any lower than openly advocating strict vegan diets for children — with no caveats or special instructions — opinion page readers across the country were struck with an op-ed capitalizing on the recent death of a former White House press secretary for political gain:

As a two-time cancer survivor, I would love to see Tony Snow's tragic death last week help raise awareness about colorectal cancer. The former White House press secretary was just three years younger than me and I know all too well how tough his battle was. Sadly, it's one that 50,000 Americans lose each year.

No one in his right mind would disagree that cancer awareness is an important issue. And how timely of PCRM to mention Tony Snow, since his funeral wasn't even until the next day.

Moving on:

When famous people like Snow or journalist Tim Russert pass away, their deaths often inspire news coverage about their particular disease. That's good because it helps educate the public. Unfortunately, the articles often focus on early detection or the latest treatments.

Whoa! Now wait just a minute. The Snow- and Russert-inspired news coverage of early cancer detection and groundbreaking treatments is "unfortunate"? What, then, should the media be discussing in light of this tragic news?

Processed meats. We're not making this up.

Food manufacturers and their lobbyists like to pretend that even the most unhealthful foods – like hot dogs, bacon and other processed meats – are OK in moderation. And anyone with a pepperoni addiction likes to pretend that jogging three miles a day will keep them healthy…

Processed meats aren't the only unsafe foods - no animal products are good for us. They increase our risk of diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and numerous other conditions…

So, if there's one thing you can do to help keep your family healthy, it's to think about replacing meats with healthier choices. Then, the next time you see a headline about a favorite newscaster or politician who's succumbed to cancer, you'll know you're doing the best you can do.

This crass, offensive, opportunistic piece of anti-meat propaganda actually ran in a number of McClatchy-Tribune newspapers last week. And we've sent a letter to every single one.

Any epidemiologist can tell you how irresponsible and arbitrary it is to focus on just one food in these important public health discussions. For instance, eating tofu has recently been found to increase dementia. But would PCRM consider that a compelling reason not to go vegetarian?

There's no room in our public discourse for activists who use phony food scares and real human suffering to promote their agendas. Using the late Tony Snow as a political football before his family even had a chance to mourn him was callous, inhuman, and (sadly) just what we've come to expect from the animal rights movement.

We would say "shame on PCRM," but it's clear that shame is a social emotion the group utterly lacks.

What They are Really About

----- Original Message -----
I understand. Some members of this group have suffered greatly at the
hands of these people. Some have had animals stolen. Some have had
their lives destroyed by animal extremists who made false charges of
animal abuse against them.  These people delight in destruction. It's
a big game to them.  They can destroy lives and homes and pretend they
are doing it for some kind of good.  And the average guy on the street
supports them. Most people just think they're trying to fight animal
abuse. They have no idea that they are supporting people who can
destroy our nation--yes, our entire nation.  The delayed drilling in
the North has caused our high gas prices and could cause the collapse
of our economy. Families become homeless. Children go hungry.  But
they saved some polar bears!

I never hated them before I joined this group, but they have shown me
what they are made of  by some of the comments they have made on this
list. They can claim to not be AR, PETA or AW, but you know they are
when they start slinging mud about back yards....what if our dogs are
in a side yard...is that any better..oh yeah that's right, just back
yards she didn't like.

"shelters" importing dogs from foreign countries

Subject: dog_anti-rescue_anti-peta_new Re: "shelters" importing dogs from foreign countries

What can be done about "shelters" importing dogs from foreign
countries? First, we need to be truthful about what's going on.
So-called "shelters" are profit motivated.  They want to make LOTS of
money. They will do whatever is necessary to do that.  The truth needs
to be published far and wide about what they're doing.

Next, the general public needs to stop buying dogs from them and stop
giving them contributions.  If we take the profit out of their
business they'll stop doing it. People need to understand that when
you buy a dog from a so-called "shelter" you could be causing a rabid
or diseased dog to be imported in his place.

We need to understand that money that goes to PETA and other
organizations quite often funds the attack of medical research labs,
restaurants and farmers.  We MUST STOP BUYING SHELTER DOGS!!!
