Being "pragmatic" by being pessimistic is defeating yourself in advance. There are things that we can say that people will accept, essays and letters that we can write. This Richard Blumenthal who ironically once worked for the Nixon administration is using the chimpanzee incident as an excuse to attack all animal ownership, and yes, I take attacks on exotic animal ownership as attacks on all ownership. Even if it were targeted at one species I would have no sympathy because I know better.
We can praise owners of chimpanzees for the good that they do. Keeping animals is a good thing. You can always find words of criticism for anyone who owns any animal. Dogs and cats get it the worst because there are more of them. The habit of criticism is pernicious.
A large part of the fight is learning to say that what we do is right. To me it's "humans have the right to keep and own animals." We can state our case, hit and run, say that this proves little about the danger and mention the benefits to humans and animals, and yes I do believe that there are benefits. It gives us our world.

Praise is more valuable than criticism.
